AECENL offers open access to The Science of Early Child Development (SECD) to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. This professional learning resource is made possible through a provincial licence funded through the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement between the Federal Government and Provincial Government under the ELCC Action Plan.

SECD brings early childhood development research and concepts to life with hundreds of readings, videos, links, questions for reflection, and interactive activities. From the latest research into babies' brain development and the impact of early experience on well-being, to topics such as child rights, literacy, and the importance of play, SECD explores how nature and nurture interact from conception on to construct a foundation for development. Included in the resources are excerpts and video clips from world renowned experts in the field of early learning and child development such as Dr. Stuart Shanker, Dr. Jean Clinton, and the late Dr. Clyde Hertzman.
Now province-wide access to SECD resources is free in Newfoundland and Labrador to two online “living textbooks” (SECD - North American and Introductory Editions) and three additional modules (Child Development Primer in English and French and Prenatal Development Module).
NL access means that you can now explore all these modules independently and adapt them to your own needs. Each module includes an overview of the topic, as well as relevant research and links to practice. AECENL will be announcing in the near future ways of how you can use these resources to obtain professional learning hours.

There are two ways to gain PL hours through the Science of Early Child Development. ECEs can download a fillable PDF from AECENL, worth 2.5 PL hours each once verified. You can also do up to 6 modules online, found on NL’s landing page in the top banner. These modules are worth 1 PL hour each and cover a range of topics.
